Freewheel Training Rides Announced

Posted by on Apr 13, 2012 in Rides and Tours | 0 comments

Freewheel is coming up and it’s time to start getting ready for the best vacation of the year.  You don’t actually have to ride FreeWheel to participate in the FW training rides. All you need is a positive attitude about riding your bike. Fill your water bottles, pump up your tires, and come join us.

Expand the dates below to see the details for that date.

March 24, 2012

The FreeWheel training rides start with a 5 mile ride on Saturday, March 24.

Start Time: 1:00 PM (this is starting to ride time, be about 15 minutes early or however long you need to be ready. There will be some announcements before the start)

Start Location: Wheeler Wetlands Park on the east side of Western, just north of the river. See this map for details: http://www.okc.gov/trails/river_trails_map.pdf. Easiest access to park is from Western.

We will ride 2 1/2 miles west along the river, and back.

Talk to your friends that always seem to want to join you, and bring them along. This is a good start out distance for new riders. We go up by 5 miles every week.

Those wanting a longer ride can join after to go further, maybe all the way to Overholser for a loop around it.

Distance: 55 miles Piedmont-Kingfisher loop

Starting time: 9:00 AM

Starting Location: grade school in Piedmont (on Piedmont Rd. north of downtown Piedmont)

Map for it is here: Ride Map

To keep you all guessing, I am once again reversing/changing a route. This way, we have a shoulder on the return trip on Highway 81.

From the school, we will go south to the four-way stop sign, Monroe, and head west to 7th street.

Turn north (right) to 178th, and back east. We are doing this loop, to get 55 miles. 🙂

Now, follow the map north to Waterloo and head west on Waterloo for one mile. Go north on Reeding to Highway 33. West on 33 to Kingfisher.

As you ride into Kingfisher you will need to go through an underpass that is kinda narrow. Watch for traffic behind you, and maybe pull over and stop and wait till it is clear to ride down and through.

Turn south (left) at the Highway 81 intersection/traffic light, and you can stop at the convenience store on the left for refills. If you need to eat in Kingfisher, you may need to find out what there is besides Braums and McDonalds, both of which are on Highway 81 (the main thoroughfare).

From the convenience store we head west to 7th street, and go south on 7th to avoid all the truck and local traffic.  Ride all the way to the dead end, and then go back east to Highway 81. We get on 81 between Braum’s (north of this intersection) and McDonald’s.

From here, we follow the map. Next convenience store and food options are in Okarche. There is even a Subway.

From Okarche our road is called Oklahoma County Line or 248th.

See you at the grade school before 9:00 AM on Saturday. Make sure to have two full water bottles!
