The annual OBS Spring Fling Thing cycling/camping weekend will be held April 30 thru March 1 at Lake Arbuckle (near Sulphur, OK). For those who want to camp, we will be staying at Buckhorn Landing. To get there take I-35 south to the Davis-Sulphur exit (Hwy 7) and go east to Sulphur. You will go to the east side of Sulphur and turn right on Hwy 177 (it will appear that you are entering the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and you are). Go about 5 miles and there will be a sign indicating Buckhorn Landing. Turn right and follow the signs to the campsite.
For those who don’t like to camp, there are several motels in Sulphur and Davis. Of course there is no requirement to stay overnight. You may choose to ride on Saturday or Sunday only.
The Saturday ride will begin at 9:00 AM. The Saturday route is about 47 miles with shorter options available. Maps will be provided at the event.
As at all OBS weekend cycling/camping outings, Saturday evening will feature the World Famous OBS Pot Luck Dinner. Be sure to bring something to share with the group and don’t forget to bring your own plates, bowls, knife, fork, spoon and something to serve your delectable delight.
Sunday morning we will depart camp at about 8:00 AM (unless announced otherwise Saturday evening) and ride to a restaurant in Sulphur for breakfast. The round-trip distance is about 20 miles.
The area around Lake Arbuckle is very scenic. There are hilly areas interspersed with relatively flat stretches, and it’s all beautiful. If you haven’t cycled there before, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.
Gary Cannon has led this ride for many years (thanks, Gary). He always promises we will have “typical Oklahoma spring weather” and he has never failed to deliver on that promise. 😉 For more information, you may contact Gary at (405) 354-8412 or email@example.com.
