May Getaway 2016 — Kaw Lake
Come join us for a relaxing weekend of cycling, camping, eating and enjoyment at Kaw Lake in northern Oklahoma near Ponca City. It’s been several years since we’ve had a cycling/camping weekend at Kaw Lake, so there may be quite a few of you who have not had the experience. Tent camping will be in Osage Cove Group Camp #3, which has been reserved for Friday and Saturday nights. RV hookup sites are also available in the Osage Cove campground. You may reserve an RV site on-line at www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Lake Ponca is a Corps of Engineers park, so National Park Senior Pass card-holders will receive a discount on the RV site fee.
The Saturday ride, which begins at 9:00 am, takes us along quiet country roads in far western Osage County, Oklahoma’s largest county. Riders will also have an opportunity to visit the Marland Mansion and Pioneer Woman Statue and Museum in Ponca City. You haven’t really visited Ponca City unless you’ve been to the downtown area where late 19th and early 20th century architecture reigns. Riders will be provided a list of suggested eateries along picturesque Grand Avenue.
Saturday’s ride will be approximately 40 miles, while the suggested route for Sunday morning will be about 33 miles. Of course shorter and longer options can always be devised by creative cyclists.
Saturday night will feature the World Famous OBS Pot Luck Dinner at 6 pm in the group camp picnic shelter. Bring something delicious to share with the group and be sure to bring your own plates, bowls, eating utensils and something to serve your shared dish if necessary. NOTE that there are electrical outlets in the picnic shelter if you need a place to plug in a crock pot or whatever.
