Crankin’ in the Country #2: Sulphur Loop

Start at Sulphur, south on 177 to 53, west to Springer, north on 77 to Davis, east on 7 back to Sulphur. Distance: about 51 miles. This is essentially the route used by the Hills of Oklaoma Tour (HOT) each October. Take a two mile side trip to the little villiage of Gene Autry and visit the excellent Gene Autry museum where you’ll find tons of “singin’ cowboy” memorabilia and more. The Tower Cafe at the Ardmore Airpark just north of Gene Autry is a great place for lunch. Take a break at the Turner Falls overlook and drink in the beauty. For a great overnight trip, camp at Arbuckle Lake or in the unique Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur.
